2020-09-13 14:10:18 | Excellent | Yes | I embarked on your course to help me with the children I work with as an SLSO at a large primary school in Sydney. However, it has become a therapy session for me. My daughter is on the spectrum and when she was diagnosed over 10 years ago I found it very hard to get any help that suited her. At school she was so quiet the assumption she was just a bit slow and was regarded as bottom of the class. Looking back now, she was the first of my 4 children, she deserved better support from the school but we navigated it together. All too often there is one view of autism and she did not fit peoples perception. The most useful help was from a paediatric gastroenterologist who listened. What your course has shown me is that together we have built her skills, so often I heard Isabelle in your descriptions of the children you worked with and the therapy has come from knowing we have done the right things together. I am glad to know I have done the best for her. It is ongoing but right now she is happy and healthy. She is in an academic stream at high school and will start her HSC next year. It took over 10 year to get her to stop having accidents of both kids but as part of toilet timing I bought her a BabyG watch which has five alarms on it which we set though out the day. She hating being told to go to the toilet but was happy to follow the alarms. It wouldn’t work for everyone but for some it could help. We had alarms at the beginning and end of lunch for example because teacher got cross if she asked to go to the toilet when they came in after lunch but there is no 5 minute warning that the end of lunch is coming. She went at the same times at weekends too. One last points, on Friday I had been ask to start working with a boy who was very very anxious and was threatening to self harm. I haven’t worked with him much before so I began by listening to his worries which can be hard as he talks very very fast and chaotically. A lot his worries stem from the fact he was going to have to get up much earlier next year to go to high school. As lunch began the teacher, the student and I were talking about making a list of questions when Isabelle facetimed me. I don’t normally take a calls in they day but it was Isabelle and she never facetimes me so I was just worried something might have happened and she needed me. The teacher encouraged me to take it. It was all fine she has got 100% in a science project hooray… so I introduced her to everyone and said were the two question the student would like to ask Isabelle now. Question 1: What is the most important thing you need at high school? Answer: A good attitude and be ready sit down and listen. Question 2: What device to I need? Answer: Just get a MacBook air that will be the best (she is very black and white). It left student feeling really positive: “Mrs Gay, Mrs Gay I am going to start researching the MacBook Air over the weekend”. He is also going to write a list of questions we are going to find the answers to next week. He ended the day on Friday so happy and positive and that makes me feel I am doing something useful. I was talking about to Isabelle about his worries, she said the problem with adults is that they answer the questions they think are important. What would be more helpful to children like us is if they could listen and answer the questions that are worrying us, even if to an adult they don’t seem important. Thank you again for a course it has made be think out how I interact with the kids I work with and how I can be a better GPS to them. Helen |
